Game Recap:

RFK Stadium - Joe Theismann threw two touchdown passes to tight end Jean Fugett in the first quarter and then watched as his team’s defense repelled two late Eagle threats to secure the win.

Both of Theismann’s scoring connections with Fugett were from 15 yards and were the ends of drives that started in Eagles territory. The first TD was preceded by Ken Houston’s recovery of an Eagle fumble at the Philly 44, the second followed a shanked punt that set the Redskins up at the 29.

Early in the final period, the defense slipped up, allowing Harold Carmichael to get free to catch a 48-yard touchdown pass from Ron Jaworski to make the score 23-17. Things got tense when the Eagles drove into Washington territory again, but Gerald Williams allowed for a momentary sigh of relief when he intercepted Jaworski’s pass at the two-yard line.

With the clock winding down, the Eagles made one last push towards the goal line. On fourth down from the Washington 30 with 41 seconds left, tackle Bill Brundige pressured Jaworski, forcing a desperation pass that linebacker Rich Milot batted harmlessly to the ground.
